The Nomad Fund | Adopt a Goat

Our Nomad Fund | Adopt A Goat project is very close to our hearts as Kamzang Journeys has been trekking with these resilient, warm, generous and extremely tough nomads for nearly two decades, and we have developed very close personal relationships with them. The Kamzang Fund has supported the nomads of Upper Mustang & Ladakh for the past 5 years with our Nomad Fund, providing the families with financial help when they lose their animals during the relentless Himalayan winters, helps with medical issues and encouraging the sales of their exquisite hand-woven textiles, aiding these industrious and creative women to raise money for themselves.

100% TO THE NOMADS
100% of your donations go directly to these nomadic families, living in their traditionally woven yak-hair tents, on the high plateaus of Upper Mustang, Nepal or in Ladakh, the Indian Himalaya. The Nomad Fund’s goal is to help sustain the quickly fading nomadic lifestyle by helping with education and the continuation of their traditional crafts and help in particularly difficult times such as harsh winters when these nomads can lose half of their livestock …

2022 – 2025 UPDATES
Kamzang Journeys continues to keep this wonderful support going for our good friends, the Tibetan nomads of Upper Mustang. Every year we spend a couple of days camping with these nomads; we listen, we ask question, we research, we connect, and we do what we can to help. In 2025, through the generosity of Upper Mustang trekker Carallyn, we sponsor one of the nomadic girls, Chhimi, for her nursing studies in Kathmandu! We are looking for further donationsn to continue her studies …

In 2023, another generous Upper Mustang client purchased a yak (and then set it free for a live of leisure in the mountains) to help support a nomadic girls’ medical issues.

And ever year we continue to distribute whatever contributions we collect equally to these nomadic families, who have continued financial, health and livestock challenges in their harsh, Himalayan life on the Tibetan plateau!

We also support these nomadici families by purchasing their wonderful hand-spun, hand-dyes (sometimes, though synthetic dyes are coming more into the picture these days) and hand-woven blankets, hook rugs, salt and gran bags & more …

2019 UPDATES
Another harsh winter in the Nepal Himalaya on the high plateaus of Upper Mustang, another massive loss of the nomad’s livestock, mostly sheep and goats, also yaks. Photos and videos from locals show dozens of carcasses of goats and sheep rotting around the tents of the nomads, unimaginably grim and tragic. The hills are covered in snow, barren, a frozen landscape. These incredibly resilient Tibetan nomads that have lived for several generations on the high plateaus of Upper Mustang, not far from the border of Tibet, in remote nomadic settlements where life is incredibly harsh, and there is no protection from the elements.

As the nomads get no help from the Nepali government, there is no way for them to recover their losses, and basic needs can’t be med. The nomads have such a close bond with their sheep and goats, giving each of the baby animals to the correct mother every evening after grazing. It’s heartbreaking situation, the third winter in the last 7 years that these nomads have suffered the loss of approximately 50% of their livestock.

Kim , the Kamzang Journeys team and our the Upper Mustang trekking group camped with the Tibetan nomads, who stay south and north of Lo Manthang, in April and will personally deliver all donated funds. The nomads can use this aid as they need, whether it is for food and supplies, medical care or to purchase replacement livestock.

2016 & 2017 UPDATES
The Kamzang Fund handed out donations to 10 families of nomads in the Upper Mustang region of Nepal in 2017, and to 8 nomadic families in 2016, thanks to the support of our Adopt a Goat donors!

2015 UPDATE
Approximately 50% of the livestock (pashmina goats, sheep & yaks) owned by the Tibetan nomads of Upper Mustang died in a particularly harsh winter, when the snows covered all of the already sparse grazing land until mid-March and hundreds (thousands counting the livestock of Mustangi villagers) died of starvation. By adopting a goat you can help the nomads replenish their flocks of goats & sheep.

2013 UPDATE
A similarly harsh winter in Ladakh & Zanskar, the Indian Himalayas, caused the death of over half of the nomadic population’s livestock, again including pashmina goats, sheep & yaks. These nomads are already struggling to survive, and this loss caused several families to sell their animals and move to Leh (or another city). Some of our friends ended up working on Indian roads in Jammu & Kashmir, a dismal future!
