The Kamzang Fund has been sponsoring children (as well as a few adults) in the Himalaya for education and medical issues for 20 years. The Kamzang Fund presently has 4 college graduate, sponsors 5 children for higher education, 20+ children for lower or middle-school education and is looking for sponsorship for many more children. The Kamzang Fund has also supported locals from the remote regions through which we trek and cycle for various medical issues over the past two decades, and continues to help villagers who have fallen through the cracks …

Ready to Help?
Inquire about which children need sponsorship and the costs involved. There are many forms of sponsorship, and the costs vary from region to region. Help can take many forms, from full school sponsorship to helping with books and school uniforms, a one-time payment, or help with medical issues. You can sponsor a Tibetan Buddhist monk or their monastery, and we help find funding for Himalayan schools and act as an intermediary for you to find ways to help.
Find children who are ‘Looking for Sponsors’ below. And scroll down this page for the list of children that we sponsor, with photos and stories. And our GRADUATES are at the bottom of this page!
The Kamzang Kids | Looking for Sponsors
Saira Basnet – Kathmandu, Nepal
Saira is the youngest daughter of our wonderful camp manager, Suresh. Suresh and his wife work very hard to take care of their three daughters, but with the high cost of education in Kathmandu these days, are struggling to get her into an affordable school. Government schools in Nepal are not worth attending, and all parents who hope for a better future for their children try to get them into private schools where they will have a chance shining. Saira is in kindergarten, 6 years old, full of giggles and yet already a wise soul.
Her yearly educational costs are about $900 even at this young age … We’re looking for someone to sponsor Saira’s education, or help with a one-year payment. Dhanyabad!

Smita Basnet – Kathmandu, Nepal
Smita is our Kamzang Journeys chef (extraordinaire) Junar’s youngest daughter, a lovely (and lively) young girl studying in kindergarten in Kathmandu. Rebecca D, an Everest trekker, has sponsored Smita’s 2023 education, and we would LOVE to find a sponsor for her continued education in Kathmandu. Her yearly educational costs are about $900 even at this young age …
Thank you so much, Rebecca, for your support of Smita’s future!

Kritika Dhulal – Kathmandu, Nepal
Kritika is Yam’s youngest daughter, presently attending kindergarten in Kathmandu (this photo is a couple of years old). We’d love to find a sponsor for her education, as she has so much enthusiasm and promist! Pease do get in touch if you’d like to help with adorable Kritika’s education. Her yearly educational costs are about $900 even at this young age …
Kritika has been sponsored for her 2023 education by Everest trekker, Rebecca D. Thank you so much for your support of Kritika’s future!

Kunga Tendup – Khumbu, Nepal
Gunda Tendup is 7 years old, and studies in Namche in Lower Kindergarten at Namche School (2021), staying with his sister Tashi Dolkar at the wonderful Home Away from Home hostel. Kunga has kindly been sponsored for his 2023 educational fees by trekker Wendy and her family and friends (holiday gift certificates!).
We’d love a sponsor to help with his education in the Everest region!

Tenzin Nurbu – Manali, Indian Himalaya
Sherap has been our Tibetan horseman and part of our Kamzang Journeys staff in Ladakh and Zanskar, the Indian Himalaya, since 2001. He and his wife, from Spiti in the Indian Himalaya, have two amazing boys of 7 and 9 years old. Their oldest son Tenzin Dhangsang is now a thawa (young monk), and we are looking for a sponsor for their younger son Tenzin Nurbu’s schooling in Manali, the Indian Himalaya.
Please message if you’d like to sponsor this extremely smart and motivated young boy! Fees are about $750 per year, and increase slightly in the higher grades …

Jhampa Namdol & Tenzin Topden – Kanchenjunga, Nepal
Lhamo Bhuti’s two younger brothers, Jhampa Namdol and Tenzin Topden, also need school sponsors. Phuntsok + wife Lhazom Bhuti (who came from Tibet about 20 years ago) have a small house in the Kanchenjunga region, but life in the mountains was difficult, and money scarce for Tibetan refugees, and education is a luxury that is hard to afford! The couple have now moved to Kathmandu to better educate the kids, and we are still looking for 2 sponsors for their education.
Please get in touch if you’d like to help with the education of Phuntsok’s two children. Fees are about $750 – $850 per year to start out …

Lobsang Chhering (Nyima Dorji (Babu) & Tashi Dikki’s Son) – Samdo (Nupri) Manaslu
This is just a tragic story. This wonderful family, headed by our good friend Babu, was cleft apart when Babu, who had been given the position of organizing the rebuilding of a monastery, got into a brawl with a jealous villager and ended up in prison in Kathmandu …
His lovely and supportive wife Tashi Dikki is alone in Samdo trying to provide for the educations of her children, but truly unable to come up with the money to support their educations. One of the sons is a reincarnated monk in Kathmandu (Lama Urgen Thinley Dorji, 11 years old), staying at Seto Gonpa where his monastic name is Gunden Tharkey. Another son is Lobsang Chhering, 15 years old, studying at the Pokhara Tibetan School at the moment. We are trying to help raise some money for the family so that Lobsang Chhering can continue his education …
Any help very much appreciated!
Tashi Lhamo – Mukut, Upper Dolpo, Nepal
We met Tashi Lhamo, once a nun, during our 2022 trek through Upper Dolpo, venturing into remote Mukut village as our original itinerary was thwarted by a 10-day storm. Tashi is such a bright star, speaks English well because of her training in a nunnery, but her family now can’t continue her education. We’re trying to find a sponsor for Tashi Lhamo to attend school in Pokhara or Kathmandu.
She has two equally bright friends, both girls, who have also either lost their sponsors or their families can’t afford educations, so once we find a sponsor for Tashi Lhamo we will also search for the other girls.
Doma & Pasang Sherpa – Solu, Nepal
We’ve known Doma and Pasang, the children of Ngima Tenji Sherpa, for nearly 20 years. He is looking for a sponsor for his lovely daughters to study in Kathmandu. Ngima still lives in the Solu Khumbu region though he is in Kathmandu often, working as a trekking and climbing guide on Everest and other 8000 meter peak expeditions. He works hard to make a living, and and spends most of what he makes sending his daughter to Kingdom Himalaya Boarding School in Kathmandu.
Please get in touch if you’d like to help with Nyima’a adorable daughters’ education! Pasang (top) 9 years old and studying is in class 2, and Doma is 6 and in upper kindergarten. Boarding fees are $1250 per year …
Yangi Lhamo & Tsering Angmo (Upper Mustang, Nepal)
These two adorable girls lost their mother several years ago, and are being raised by their grandmother while their father works overseas. They live in Tangge, Upper Mustang, Nepal. They are currently attending pre-school in Upper Mustang, and we are looking for sponsors to help with their education!
Please get in touch if you’d like to help one or both of these two Mustangi children. Fees are about $500 per year to start.

Pasang Sherpa – Kathmandu, Nepal
Jamie McGuiness, my Project Himalaya partner, sponsors Pema’s sons Lhakpa and Tshering, and Gyalgen and family also received support from several other trekkers from Project Himalaya. The three kids all go to school in Kathmandu, but sadly Gyalgen passes away in 2016. Pema is now desperately looking for a sponsor for her youngest daughter, Pasang, 12 years old and in class 4, just about to enter class 5 in 2020.
Please get in touch if you can help with beautiful Pasang’s education in Kathmandu! Fees are about $750 per year.

Chowang Tenzing (Gunsa, Kanchenjunga, Nepal)
Our friend Tashi and his wife, owners of a small lodge in Gunsa, in the Kanchenjunga region, are looking for a sponsor for their son Chowang, now attending class 3 or 4 in school in Kathmandu. They are having trouble making ends meet, and would love help from a sponsor. Please get in touch if you’d like to help. Fees are about $850 per year to start.
Tsering Kondo – Upper Mustang, Nepal
See Tsering Kondo’s ‘medical’ story below; she has been hard of hearing from birth, and her condition was misunderstood by her parents and the villagers, assuming she wasn’t bright.
The Kamzang Fund sent her to a public school at Chhomrong in Upper Mustang (with a donation from friend John T for a year) but her mother decided she would do better at their public school in Yara where she gets special attention from the teacher, who has been there for 17 years. Below is a photo from March 2015 – she’s happy, looking beautiful and flourishing staying back home with her family.
We are looking for a full-time school sponsor for her to attend a better school in Pokhara or elsewhere soon. Her school in Yara is only a village school with 5 or so students and only goes up to class 5.
